Up the Creek

A silvery tongue of tide clambers eagerly over the marshy mud banks and slithers silently inland up Faversham Creek.

Past sedge topped shores, on which heavy boughed trees embrace pastel painted cottages, it flows.

The pooling waters release waiting craft from their mud berths; lap at the gnarled wooden feet of jetties; glide beneath Faversham bridge.

This far upriver the windswept wildness of the seaward reaches has been tamed. Gentrified. Once working wharves replaced by desirable modern housing. The Thames Barge Reperator a living testament to a bygone way of life for the town.

Ashore, a rain shower releases a rich loamy smell of fertility. Vibrant hollyhocks nod their approval, clambering skyward in a riot of red.

I shelter beneath the dense drooping canopy of a tree - outside the covid-closed doors of The Albion pub. Whisps of steam rise from the path as the warm drizzle clears.

 I press on up the hill, into town. The tall tower and soaring masonry of the church gates speak of Faversham’s historic trading fortunes - as one of the Cinque Ports. Today its gates and doors are covid-chained shut.

Nearby, the Faversham brewers, Shepherd Neame, (creators of my favourite tipple, Spitfire amber ale) are bustling busy. A bitter sweet aroma, of wort mingled with fragrant Kentish hops, scents the air.

The broad High Street - half timbered, bow fronted and stone flagged - tells the tale of both Faversham’s historic mercantile fortune and its path to a new prosperity.

The tide is fully made now. About to ebb - to return to the sea. 
Back aboard Stargazer, moored off the mouth of the creek, I break out a celebratory Spitfire on news that the UK Covid alert status has been reduced from four to three - and that the French travel quarantine is therefore to be reviewed.

Stargazer foams down Four Fathoms Channel. It is optimistically named. We have, at most,  two metres under the keel - sometimes less . I am keeping a close eye on the depth gauge. It is our first visit to The Swale.

The sun breaks through, and the wind settles, as we clear Garrison Point, at the mouth of the Medway. Gateway to the sea.

We beat in between high golden banks of uncovered sand - surveyed impassively by recumbent seals. The new tide flooding beneath us. Off the entrance to Faversham Creek, the Thames barge Ironsides lies at anchor, waiting for enough  water to enter. Sheep bleat from the pastures. The wind’s urgent passage-making rush is stilled to a contemplative sigh. Our signal to pause.

 Current begins to flow immediately. Battery voltage rises from, a heavily discharged, 12.3V to an, unprecedented 13.0V. On deck a wan glimmer of sunshine illuminates intermittent fine drizzle . And still the current flows.

Below deck, I have found some LED’s to fit the galley light . The ‘lollipop’ design LED’s for the deckhead lights are due tomorrow.

On Thursday morning I have an appointment to meet Alan-the-sail maker, at Wilkinson’s Sails, in Faversham. He will modify the 75W folding panel by pressing in lashing eyelets and stitching in loops for stiffening rods. 
On Thursday afternoon Stargazer has an appointment with Bob-the-lock-keeper. To put to sea.

Mojo


On this Sunday in June the river Medway rediscovers its Mojo. Covid-quiet, for the past three months, an air of normality returns.


Lock down rules may mean that lunchtime drinkers remain banished from 'The Pier.' The comfortable wooden benches, of its river facing beer garden, strangely forlorn - quiet and empty.


But the Medway Yacht Club slipway has returned to its normal buzz of weekend nautical activity.


Cruisers clamber aboard their craft . . .


. . . to complete the tasks of a, covid disrupted, spring fit out . . .


. . . in the lazy heat of a summer's afternoon.


Dinghy racers, old and . . . .


. . . .young, take to the water.


Dueling through the shifts and lulls, as the tide ebbs. 


An enforced hibernation ends for the Woods cat 'Faith.' Refurbished and rejuvenated over the winter, her mast was craned in last week . Now she is off for sea trials . Ready for adventure.


Aboard Stargazer, I keep a watchful eye on the shifting sands of border restrictions. France has lifted its 100km internal travel limit from tomorrow (15.6.20), giving free rein to cruise Brittany, the Vendee and beyond - once in France. Reciprocal border restrictions, however, remain for those European (or quasi European) nations which have imposed quarantines on travelers from France - as the UK and Spain have . The UK decision is up for government review on the 29th of June . 
There is talk too, among UK port staff, that internal UK port to port navigation restrictions may be relaxed for July.
First though, some sea trials of our own - once our solar panels are installed, during the coming week.

I’m reading in the back garden. Waiting for a courier to arrive with Stargazer’s new solar panels. A “hello” from the, open, back gate is followed by a frenzy of unwrapping.

I hurry down to Stargazer, to see how they fit. The 25W panel sits neatly between windscreen and cabin skylights, as hoped. It feels happy to bend to match the convexity of the deck . And, best of all, the cable exits from the port side top edge of the rectangular panel - the most convenient side to hardwire it in  from.

The folding panel is a perfect fit between the grab rails on the forward cabin top. Ideal for lashing it in position. The panels, mounted in their robust fabric carrier, are self supporting. I don’t think we’ll need to fit batten pockets after all . Just replace the four corner Tenax fasteners with eyelets - to provide lashing points.

My parcel included professional, steel sprung, rubberised edge protector strip - with which to freshen up Stargazer’s faithful 50W roving panel.
I duck under the cover of the spray hood, as a rain shower passes through, to fit it.

Teresa, MD of Marlec, (who supplied the panels) let me into the secret of how to apply the edge strip. Starting in the middle of the long side, gently tap it on - using a rubber mallet. And keep plenty of tension on at the corners. 
One pot of coffee and a rain shower later, the panel is looking better than new. Split hose was originally used to edge it by Goblin’s commissioning crew, all those years ago.

The rain clears . I rig the refurbished panel and admire our deck-full of (mostly) roving solar. A full 150W. With room, just about, to add a second 50W panel, to take us to the magic 200W - if we need to, in the future . The controller is specced to take it . And I’m having an additional deck plug fitted, just in case.

We’re almost ready to get off - somewhere, anywhere that will have us! While we wait for further unlocking, we’ll prowl the East Coast anchorages . First, however, to get the fixed panel and controller fitted, cabin light bulbs swapped for LED’s and the folding panel eyeletted.

When I blogged daily from Stargazer’s Biscay, Scilly and Irish cruises I used Blogpress, on my phone - until the photos stopped (retrospectively) displaying. You may have noticed the problem on some older posts but not others? The ones with photos were written on PC . The ones with missing photos on Blogpress.

With no way to keep up with a lap top’s power demands at anchor, the phone App is the only way to Blog regularly on passage - so, with a summer of cruising (hopefully) in prospect, I thought it was time for another try.

Quest for Power - part 2


POWER GENERATION 


I weigh our options for off grid electricity generation. For freedom from the ties of shore . Phone in hand I research solutions, as Stargazer swings to the tide. There are three main technologies to consider.


Water powered generators have developed apace - since their adoption by the planet circling, solo sailors, of the Vendee Globe Race fleet . They use the motion of the boat through the water to drive a propeller, which in turn powers a generator.



The Watt & Sea is the current state of the art. They mount, like an outboard motor, and can be pivoted clear of the water to reduce drag. That's one downside . Their action slows the boat . Another is that they really only generate power, in useful amounts, at speeds over 5 knots. No problem on a Vendee Globe IMOCA 60 averaging 20 to 25 knots. But an issue for a 31' cruising boat, with an average cruising speed around 5 knots - like Stargazer.



When in the lowered position, the leg exerts a powerful lever, as the propeller bites. Reports have surfaced of mounting bracket failures. A heavier duty bracket is now offered. My thinking is that the stresses will now be transferred to the stern of the boat - which won't have been laid up with such loadings in mind . Structural modifications would be required for a reliable set up.

Wind powered generators are familiar technology. They operate day and night, whether the boat is at anchor or at sea. They also take up minimal deck space, an important consideration aboard Stargazer. One downside is that the best power is produced only at relatively high wind speeds. 



Another is that some designs, particularly the higher output ones, create a loud thrumming roar from their rotating blades. The elegantly sculptural Air Breeze is a notorious offender. I once left an anchorage, off the otherwise idyllic island of Houat, rather than endure its siren call through the night. Almost all wind gens, which I have encountered, create some level of vibration . It is not heard on deck - but resonates below, within the sounding box confines of the hull.


The wind gen which, from my visits aboard other boats, combines the least blade roar and the lowest level of vibration is the Eclectic Energy D400. Indeed, when French builders Ovni fit them to the integral stern gantries of their admirably idiosyncratic shoal draft aluminium craft, I can vouch that the D400 is entirely rumble and roar free . However this is not universally the case with all installations . A Najad ,which I was invited to shelter aboard (when caught out by a rain squall, whilst rowing ashore, on the Kenmare River), had a robustly pole mounted D400 professionally installed . It rumbled and growled unbearably as the wind shrieked overhead and the rain danced on her immaculate teak decks. .



Solar panels, photovoltaic cells, convert the sun's rays into electricity . Even on overcast days . They are silent in operation, with no moving parts - and are therefore free of the maintenance requirements of wind or water powered generators . Their downside is that they demand significant space in order to mount the required square metre-age to supply a boat's electrical needs . Perhaps accommodating them would be too tall an order aboard Stargazer? 


Or perhaps not.....There is a patch of cabin top, just forward of the windscreen and aft of the twin 'saloon skylight' hatches, which is relatively un-shaded and traffic free . Its just large enough for a 25W panel . Then there's our existing 'roving' 50W panel to be deployed, at anchor, wherever the sun falls best . On passage this stows neatly in our aft cabin . Together the two panels would get us half way to the 150W which, I estimate that, we need for self sufficiency.


Sunware (makers of our roving panel), I discover, produce a folding 75W panel. In fact it is two flexible panels mounted on a heavy duty fabric backing. It comes supplied with 'popper' fastenings, along the four sides of its perimeter, with which to clip it onto a bimini or awning. Those 'poppers' could be replaced with eyelets, to be used for rope lashings . And two diagonal pockets, for removable battens, could be added to the reverse side - to hold the panel rigid. That would produce a 75W, self supporting, roving panel which could be lashed in position at anchor; but would fold up, to stow alongside our 50W panel, when sailing. Here is our break through solution. A way to mount 150W of solar power aboard Stargazer without the structural surgery, unwanted weight gain, or aesthetic slight, of a gantry.



POWER MANAGEMENT 



With a solution identified to our power generation needs, it is time to think about the deployment of that power. Since Stargazer was commissioned, ten years ago, solar controllers have come a long way. The science of Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT in the jargon) has been created . This maximises power extraction, from a solar panel, as light conditions and battery state vary - making the available power go further and charge harder.


I don't pretend to completely understand how this works . But its along the lines that the MPPT controller senses both the output from the solar panel and the condition of the battery bank . It then manipulates the charging voltage to optimise the charge regime many times per minute . The Victron 75 / 15  is universally praised by anyone, whom I've spoken to on the subject . The '75' refers to the highest voltage which it creates; and the '15' refers to its delivering a maximum of 15A of current . It can handle up to 200W of solar - just in case we wanted to add another panel in future .


Reduction in on board electrical consumption is the next area to attend to, in order to balance the energy equation . Stargazer's navigation lights are all LED's . They consume only 10% of the power which incandescent bulbs would . Her cabin lights, all 26 of them, however are incandescent . Even parsimonious use (say of a frugal four over the galley, followed by two in the saloon), whilst preparing and eating supper, has a profound and detrimental effect on the health of our house batteries. 


The last piece of the, off grid energy freedom, jig saw puzzle is therefore to replace the G4 halogens in the deck head and reading lights with LED's . Warm white so as to maintain Stargazer's snug and homely below decks ambience.

Orders have been placed . Parts deliveries are eagerly awaited . Paul (the electrician) and Alan (the sail maker) are booked to carry out panel /controller installation, and folding panel 'enhancements' respectively . 




I look back down to my phone. Exciting reports are surfacing that Dutch mainland ports will reopen to visiting yachts from the 15th of June, followed by the Waddenzee ports from the 1st of July . My heart leaps. Freedom beckons . I trawl the Dutch government website for confirmation, of what I fervently hope to be true . Sweden and the UK are excluded . A disappointment . European nautical lock down release has begun, but not yet for the UK . Freedom beckons from afar . Tantalises . France is due to review restrictions on Monday . Our next hope for good cruising news.
