Down Channel 8

Sylvan serenity, with scope for exploration by dinghy.

Stargazer set out from Brighton, suspended in a spectral world of grey.

Dodging anchored anglers, whilst we hugged the shallows. Making progress as best we could, until the tide turned in our favour.

The afternoon brings sunshine and a south westerly sea breeze. With the tide now under us, and sluicing though 'Boulder Street' (the inshore passage through the reefs off Selsey Bill), Stargazer is storming along. Making seven knots over the ground in twelve knots apparent.

The verdant mouth of Chichester harbour opens before us.

We turn east. Past the sandy East Head anchorage. Winding our way along the wooded Chichester Channel. Past the fork to Thorney. Past the fork to Bosham. Round one last bend and into Itchenor Reach.

Paddlers put off, from the shingle foreshore, for an aquatic evening constitutional.

I inflate the Avon and row in for a shore-side stroll.

Stargazer lies serenely to her mooring, resting after a week on passage south. The sharp staccato cry, of an oystercatcher on the wing, serving only to underscore the tranquil silence.
