La Hirondelle 107

As luck would have it, Stargazer timed her arrival perfectly. To coincide with the start of a three day festival of folk music.

Known as the Traversees de Tatihou.

So called, because stages are set up both on the Ile de Tatihou. . . . . .

. . . . .and on the St Vaast quayside.

The musicianship has been extraordinary. Playing in a tradition, whose rhythms, cadences and instrumentation transcend national boundaries.

Band members routinely switching instruments during the course of their sets.

There are no visible leaders, let alone conductors. Not even a counting in to songs.

Yet the troupes stay together, tight as their tambourine skins.

Face painters gleefully stalk the audience, in search of converts to their art.

Adding to the colourful carnival atmosphere, amongst the milling crowds.

Many of whom are moved to dance.

Whilst others simply soak up the toe-tapping ambience. Each enjoying the occasion in their own way.
