La Hirondelle 108

At high water there is depth aplenty off the pier head.

Or to sail around the Ile de Tatihou.

At low tide the approaches, to St Vaast, dry to nigh on two metres.

Revealing the stone walls and stout posts, of the oyster farms. For which the bay is famous.

A pair of tall gates permit vessels, within the port, to remain afloat. Presently they open in the middle of the day and the middle of the night. Neither is ideal, for an onward passage of ten to fourteen hours, depending on destination.

If Stargazer waits a while, gate openings will coincide with the dawn. But, forecasts suggest, by then the wind will have veered from northeast (which affords a slant) to east (square on the nose) and dropped. Somewhere, there is a happy medium to be found.
