Wed 11.7.12: Auray River, Le Rocher. This is the spot favoured by George Millar, of "Oyster River" fame, to anchor "Amokura." I can see why: shelter is perfect, and the atmosphere tranquil, beneath high wooded banks.
We left Noirmoutier as a low swell began to roll, beam on, through the St Pierre anchorage. I only realised why as we cleared Pointe des Dames and met 25 knots of NW wind driving a stampede of white horses before it. They were steeplechasers: vaulting high over the bow and cascading aft down the leeward deck. It was a wild and windswept beat across the Loire approaches with wind over tide steepening the seas. We clawed our way NW,to windward of the Plateau du Four, threading the gap between the main reef and the outcrop to the SW. Then eased sheets off Houat with waves breaking over the coach roof; and tore down to the entrance of the Golfe du Morbihan. I furled the jib as we surfed in past the lighthouse riding the swell and the tide.
On we swept under double reefed main; past Le Grand Huernic, into the Auray River and up that winding Oyster River to its head.
