Espana 9

Stargazer lies before the church of Santa Maria de la Ascuncion. Which has dominated this clifftop for a thousand years. Marvelling at the creation of those medieval master craftsmen.

Soaring columns emulate the mountain backdrop of the city. Reaching for the heavens.

Stone (seemingly) floats, suspended by blue sky.

The Puente Romano (Roman Bridge), its back gracefully arched, like a cat's, serves both church and castle. Its steep steps thronged with sightseers.

Watched by the gurning gargoyles, which jut from barrel tiled roofs.

Faithfully replicated new masonry, standing alongside the weather worn original.

Santa Ana castle is bluff and square jawed, perched at the cliff edge.  A strong armed counterpoint, to the airy grace of the church. Built in the late eleven hundreds to offer worldly-wise protection, to its spiritual sibling.

The limestone cliffs are themselves a source of wonder.

Karst rock towers rise sheer, from the sea, to rival those of the castle keep and its nineteenth century lighthouse.

Listing improbably. Pocked by shadowed caves ; and slashed by up-tilted layers of stratification.
