La Hirondelle 48

On the small island of Yeu, the Fete de la Musique (the French nationwide celebration of the Summer Solstice) is a convivial, sit down affair.

In contrast to its big city near neighbour, La Rochelle. Which partied on an heroic scale, last year, during Stargazer’s stay. Seemingly, the entire population taking to the streets. Turning them into rivers of people song and rhythm.

On Yeu, sunshades and gazebos are set out across the quayside. Allowing knots of people to congregate; drink or dine; sit and listen; or percolate slowly through the musical attractions. As takes their fancy.

At the western end, of the harbour, a brass band strikes up.

Enthusiastically conducted.

In the centre, a DJ plays 'golden oldies.' Which grow more contemporary as the sun sets. To the east, ensconced deep within a densely packed bar, an edgy rock ensemble celebrates the shortest night of the year, with its incisive licks.

Island or city, the ticking of the seasons' clock, is ceremonially saluted. In a manner which is uniquely French.
