Sea conditions are surprisingly boisterous, when Stargazer emerges, at sunrise, from the sanctuary, of Port Kerel's granite walls.
All sail set, eighteen knots of breeze, on the quarter; Stargazer romps, along the southern shore of Belle Ile.
The beaches of Hoedic are soon abeam. Off which, the phone detects a sniff of signal. The morning forecast suggests eighteen, rising to twenty five, knots of breeze, from west south west.
Stargazer rides a long swell. Surfing at six to seven knots, as we gybe off the Grogueguez reefs. Marked by a candy striped light tower. Aglow, in the innocent light, of a new day.
Stargazer is, by now, two hours ahead of schedule. Thundering along. Square before the wind. Jib furled. Full main, taut as a drumskin.
Our swift progress means that the Ile des Goélands reefs, off the entrance to Piriac, are still covered, on arrival. Removing the natural breakwater, which I had anticipated would mellow the swell, for Stargazer’s final approach, to the port.
Within, protection is complete. Afforded by harbour walls and a cill. Which dries to two and a half metres.
