Zen Again 70

'La Houle,' the Biscay swell is pumping, off the tip of Noirmoutier. In from the shores of Newfoundland, borne by a westerly breeze. Which provides the silver lining, to a grey cloud canopy.

Stargazer clears the Ile du Pilier in four tacks.

Hard on the wind. A fair tide beneath her.

We bear off at Les Boeufs. The last of the outlying reefs.

Up goes the cruising chute. On goes a mid-morning pot of coffee. La Houle surging beneath us. Stargazer adopting a sailor's rolling gait.

A rhythmic lift from the starboard quarter, heel to port, her bow rises, a curtsey to starboard. As each comber sweeps by.

Our progress is stately, but steady, as the tide turns and, with no sun to fuel a sea breeze, drops, in the middle part of the day. Evening finds us dodging pot buoys, slipping between the Grande Barge and Petite Barge reefs.

Taking a, high water, shortcut into Les Sables d'Olonne.
