An English Summer 19

West Country time. It marches slow, pausing to listen, to the birds sing, to the rippling run of the river ; to watch the branches sway in the wind, the boats swing with the tide, the sun sparkle on the water. Yet it slips past fast.

It is fully three days, since Stargazer picked up this mooring, yet it seems only moments ago.

On one bank, the village of Dittisham, climbs away, up a steep hillside, bedecked with lush green foliage. Locals pronounce it 'Dit-Suum,' in a soft rolling burr. On the other bank, stands the stone quay, of Greenway House (first picture). The Christie Belle, secured alongside, its rough hewn masonry, for the night.

The weather forecasts are changing, with the speed of the clouds, pursued across the sky, by a building north east breeze. The direction is fair, but the strength, for tomorrow, is uncomfortably high, for our onward passage. At sea, it will gust to thirty knots.
But we can bide our time. It is West Country time.
