Zen Again 117

I'm going on, not so much a bear hunt, as a Raymarine ram hunt. A day of reflection and Googling, yesterday, plus a WhatsApp with PSi Paul this morning, has led Stargazer's skipper to conclude that our pilot problems are caused by a failing ram. Most likely the motor brushes are either worn or sticking. As a sealed unit, a replacement ram (the most costly component in the system) is the only available remedy.

When the new Chateau marina was built, Moulin Blanc's sole chandlery decamped. Now, the tables are turned. Le Chateau serves only the tourist trade. Whilst all three major French chandlery chains have built supermarket sized stores, at Moulin. Which is also home to sail makers, commisioning agents for the big boat brands and several sailing schools. Fertile ground, for a ram hunt.

In USHiP, the answer is 'non.' From a disinterested assistant dusting a display of Raymarine plotters. When pressed, as to whether a Raymarine EV100 ram could perhaps be ordered, the answer is 'maybe, but it will take a month.' Can I pay extra for an express delivery? 'Non.'

bigship (sic) are more responsive. But are primarily focussed on motor boats. Which are wheel, not tiller, steered. A regretful 'non.'

EVO are sailors through and through. But foil boards and Hobie cats are their speciality. Again, a regretful 'non.'

Accastillage Diffusion is housed in two hanger scale buildings. One is a commissioning centre, for factory fresh boats out for delivery. The other, a king sized chandlery. Mathieu bonjours me on entry. Can he help? Would I like a new ram ordered? Do I require express delivery? In Accastillage Diffusion, the answer is 'oui.'

(NB:The advice and materials, for Stargazer's DIY dyneema backstay were also provided by an Accastillage Diffusion. In Le Havre. See Zen Again 24 & 26)

The replacement pilot ram is expected on Wednesday or Thursday. At which point it will become clearer, whether it is the cause of the pilot malfunction, or a symptom. Aboard Stargazer, fingers are firmly crossed, for plain sailing toward a solution.
