Dandelion 104

It is a steep climb, up the wooded cliff, at Val des Terres. Steps lead through reminders of St Peter Port's fortified past. Their treads dished, by the wear of toiling boot soles.

Breaks in the foliage frame views of Castle Cornet. With boats at anchor in the horseshoe of Havelet Bay. Escaping the bustle (and mooring fees) of the main harbour.

Which lies the other side of the high sea wall. In westerly winds (as now) Havelet provides the perfect sun trap and wind break.

Out in the Little Russel channel, beyond the castle, a coaster awaits permission to enter port. The beaches of Herm glinting in the distance. As soon as the high speed passenger ferry leaves, she will be given the three green lights that she is waiting for.

The path levels. Running along the cliff edge. Dappled by the afternoon sun. Leading out to the Clarence Battery.

Built to defend the Bailiwick, it was subverted, during the Nazi occupation, to subjugate the islanders. Now it is reclaimed by nature and we sightseers, enjoying its commanding, clifftop view.
