Shock headlines shriek from my phone screen: The sinking of superyacht Bayesian, by a suspected waterspout, off Sicily. A desperate search for survivors, hampered by the fifty metre depth, in which she is lying.
An intense storm struck the north coast of Sicily (red cross, annotated 'B'). Fed by the extreme water temperatures, in our warmed up world. The tragedy unfolded not far from Sardinia. Where Daryl and Shirley, aboard Dream Catcher, were anchored, the last time that I heard from them.
I WhatsApp, to check that all is well. But hear nothing for forty eight hours. Before a reply. Recounting a storm struck night, in Palma Nova anchorage, off Mallorca. Dragging in fifty knot winds. Putting to sea, to ride the gale out. Before making a two day passage ( hence the forty eight hour lag), to the security of Cartagena, on the Spanish mainland. (Yellow line, annotated ‘D.C.’)
Unseasonal conditions are on their way to Poole, this week. Of a lesser scale, it is hoped. Courtesy of hurricane Ernesto. So that it is no chore, to be waiting in port, whilst a courier delivers a replacement camera.
As Daryl and Shirley will testify, sitting snug and sheltered, with the comforts of shoreside amenities readily to hand, whilst wild weather whistles by to seaward, has a special pleasure all of its own.

"sitting snug and sheltered, with the comforts of shoreside amenities readily to hand, whilst wild weather whistles" ... damn right!
